Hard/Flight Cases
Guitar, Banjo and Mandolin
We make our own line of high quality flight ready hard cases for guitars, banjos and mandolins. These cases represent the most protective and feature rich fiberglass case on the market today. We start with a teardrop design which has substantially more structural integrity than a shaped case. Our fiberglass layup uses a proprietary method which makes our cases, pound, for pound, the strongest case on the market. Since we do all of our own assembly, we are proud to say that this entire case and all of its components are made in
America with American labor.
All of our Colorado Case Company products were designed to protect from the damaging effects of the sun, and these are no exception. The textured exterior is available in a very light bone or white. The latches, hinges and leather wrapped handle represent the finest fittings available. Each case comes with a high quality shoulder strap that lets you carry the case conveniently at your side.
The inside is unlike any other case, of any technology, you have ever seen. Right away you will notice two large tool boxes instead of the typical single box under the neck. Both of our boxes can be accessed without removing or lifting the instruments. There is enough storage capacity inside this case to not need any additional baggage for a weekend trip! Add an insulated case cover and with the large exterior pocket you are set for a three day trip. More importantly, on the inside you will see that our foam padding is of equal thickness throughout the instrument. Like with our premium soft cases, the foam we use is a high quality combination of closed and open cell foams. Many inferior cases use only a thin layer of foam around the body. This leaves your instrument vulnerable. The entire body and neck are supported and never in contact with an exterior wall. This means that the instrument will have zero movement inside. Many premium flight cases have a foam system that allows for some movement, and when the case is dropped, the instrument continues on its path and impacts the inner case wall. This ability to move inside the case is what leads to broken necks inside flight cases. You will also notice that our seal is very flexible and durable. We used a specially formulated EPDM rubber to make a completely waterproof seal. Many less protective fiberglass cases use PVC which is not as strong and doesn’t allow for a complete seal, if they use any seal at all. Being able to tightly seal a case lets you better control the humidity on the inside, and ensures that no rain or snow will ever get inside.
While we believe that the Colorado Case Company flight case represents the best fiberglass technology on the market, we recognize that there are situations where fiberglass cases are not the best solution. As a result we are dealers for some of the best flight case options in the world. We currently are dealers for Accord, Hiscox and Karura. All of these cases are made outside of the
United States. The Accord and karura cases are made of high tech carbon fiber and represent the very lightest cases available, though they are more expensive than fiberglass. Both of these cases can be ordered in stock or custom configurations. The Hiscox case is a molded thermosplastic case that comes in a wide variety of stock configurations for guitar, saxophone, mandolin, violin and cello. The Hiscox case is an outstanding value and is well suited for someone who only flyes occasionally but still wants a reasonable lightweight case for everyday use. Please contact us directly with questions regarding these three imported brands.
Due to problems beyond our control with representing Calton cases, we have decided to no longer represent them and instead focus on our own brand of fiberglass flight cases and the higher end carbon fiber case solutions from more compatible and experienced vendors.
Harp, Accordion, Hammered Dulcimer and Keyboard
We also make our own flight rated cases for specific, hard to fit, instruments such as lever harps, accordions, keyboards/mixers and hammered dulcimers. These cases are all made in our
Colorado facility. All of these cases are custom made from your measurements or tracings, depending on the instrument. The technology we use to make these cases starts with a 1” thick foam core. This special rigid foam core makes the case very light, yet extremely durable and designed to provide you with years of service. If you plan on using these cases as airline baggage, we highly recommend the addition of the optional fiberglass reinforcement. If you simply want a rigid case for additional protection, and you don’t plan to fly, then the unreinforced case is adequate. We have been making these cases for 10+ years and have literally thousands of these custom cases in service. They are designed to withstand the demands of today’s airline baggage handling systems.
These cases are extremely insulating, like all of our products, and designed to protect your instrument from the damaging effects of rapid temperature changes and temperature extremes. In addition to providing thermal protection, they offer substantial protection from rain or snow. While not completely waterproof, they will definitely keep your instrument dry in any rain or snow storm you might encounter.
The exterior is a beautiful 1000 denier Cordura available in twelve wonderful colors. Since we use brand name, domestic Cordura, you will be sure to receive a very durable product that stands up to abrasion and is incredibly durable and nearly impossible to tear. Less protective cases use an imported Cordura which costs less, but simply won’t perform as well or as long as the American made version. All of these cases come with at least one large flat zippered pocket, and many come with two of these pockets. You will also find a high quality removable shoulder strap, to help with carrying, as a standard feature. Additionally, the standard configuration for most instrument cases allows for plenty of convenient handles and pull straps. If ordered with the optional fiberglass, you can inspect it by pulling back the Cordura shell. The Cordura shell can be easily removed for repairs or for a regular cleaning. The closure for this case is a large, high quality commercial zipper. There are no latches or external fittings to break. A lock can be added between the zipper pulls if desired. Since these cases are all custom made, we can probably customize the pockets, handles and straps to match your specific needs.
On the inside you will see that the case is wide open with no dividers, foam or supports. Since the case was designed especially for a specific instrument, there is no need to fill space with extra internal fittings which just add weight and cost, as it was made to fit the instrument perfectly. The entire inside of the case is lined with grey velour which provides a beautiful, non-abrasive, finish for your case.
